As we near completion of Phase 1 the new Meydenbauer Bay Park, we want to provide you an update of the City’s future plans for the Park.  The City’s has placed the Meydenbauer Bay Park in the City’s new 2019-2025 Capital Facilities Program (CIP).   The following is a summary what we have learned:

  • Planning Starts in 2020.  No money is budgeted for 2019, but planning is set to begin in 2020.  The 2019-2025 CIP budgets $3.5 million for planning, design, and permitting as follows 2020: $500,000, 2021: $1.5 million, 2022: $1.5 million.  Actual construction is not yet planned, but could begin in 2022 or 2023.
  • Phase 2 Will Be the Last Phase Completing the Project.  The City budget refers to completing all the elements of the Park.  The next Phase will be the last Phase.
  • Phase 2 Scope and Cost Will Be Massive.  According to the Master Plan, the Park could include marina reconfiguration, pedestrian promenade, parking structures, a floating boardwalk, an elevated viewing platform, an activity building on 99th Ave, a gateway from Downtown, and closing 100th.  , The total cost for Phase I was $19.2 million, including design, permitting, and construction, which is more than three times the 2010 estimate of about $6.0 million.  The 2010 estimate for the remaining phases was $38 million, so the cost of the remaining phases could top $100 million.

MBNA recognizes that Phase 2 presents significant issues for the community. Our counsel recommends that MBNA start planning now so that MBNA is ready to participate with the City when the planning starts in earnest a year from now.  This preparation could involve active participation by the MBNA community as well as retaining planning consultants, traffic engineers, attorneys, public relations consultants and others.

The MBNA Board will be meeting soon to begin to put together a plan of action and to estimate the resources required.  We’ll keep you posted.
