MEYDENBAUER BAY PARK PHASE II:
We are in touch with the City of Bellevue Park Department and are waiting to hear about the first meeting with the design team from Berger & Associates. The MBNA will have a seat at the table when this process starts. 
 
Demolition of the two older duplexes on the site should start soon. Engineers and surveyors should be on the site soon as well.

MILFOIL TREATMENT:
The annual Meydenbauer Bay Milfoil Treatment program is about to get underway with a scheduled start date of July 17th, which is the earliest it can be accomplished. This program, which is under the MBNA Permit, brings together treatment of the shoreline in front of the Yacht Club, the condos fronting the bay, the city docks, the park, and also individual homeowners who live on the Bay.
 
The MBNA Treatment Coordinator is Betty Mastropaolo, who can be reached at bmastro@gmail.com. Cost for single family homeowners is $350. The material used is DIQUAT which is approved by the EPA and DOE and is not harmful to humans or pets. Treatment is highly recommended this year as the hot weather in May gave these weeds an early start.
 
SAFETY AND WATER SAFETY IN MEYDENBAUER BAY:
This summer brings an increase in paddle boards, kayaks, swimmers and others using the bay. Be alert and remember to follow the speed and wake rules and the noise ordinances. The Mercer Island Marine Patrol will be a frequent sight in the bay where they will be checking boat registration, operator permits, and safety equipment. Do not be a violator!!!
 
SECURITY:
There are other levels of security ashore in the park, with the park Rangers (425-452-7225) and the Bellevue Police 911. Please lock your car and boat and keep your valuables out of sight.
 
DO NOT FEED THE GEESE OR OTHER WATERFOWL:
We have had several closures of the Meydenbauer Park swim beach due to high levels of E Coli bacteria. One of the contributing factors of this is goose poop. Feeding geese and other waterfowl makes this problem worse. 
 
BELLEVUE CITY COUNCIL ELECTION, FALL 2023:
This fall, there are four City Council seats available with eight people running. Two are incumbents with six challengers. The MBNA will be sponsoring a Candidate Forum to be held on October 12, 2023, at the Overlake Golf Club. There will be more information sent out on this as we get closer to the events.
 
SEA LION IN THE BAY:
Several weeks ago, a large California Sea Lion was seen in the Bay by at least two people at two different times. This situation has been reported to the proper wildlife agencies and the police. The Sea Lion was no doubt in the lake after salmon and appears to have moved on. If sighted, it should be avoided, but reported to the MBNA at 425-785-9000.

Happy Fourth of July Meydenbauer Bay Neighbors Association: There is a lot going on around the Bay that we want you to know about.  

Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club Spring Lunch: On June 8th, MBYC sponsored its spring lunch, bringing together the following agencies and organizations who interact in Meydenbauer Bay: Bellevue Police Department, Medina Police Department, Mercer Island Marine Patrol, Bellevue Park Department, REI, MBYC Youth Sailing, Meydenbauer Bay Neighbors Association, A Representative from all the Condominium Association from the Bay, and the Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club. Items discussed included Water Safety, Crime and Homelessness, Schedule for Phase II of the Meydenbauer Bay Park, Speed and Wake issues in the Bay, Parking, Traffic, Indian Gillnetting, Noise, and other areas of mutual interest.  

Water Safety, Speed, and Wake Restrictions: It has been suggested by the City, some residents around the Bay, and others that speed and wake restrictions within the Bay be considered. This issue is being studied while trying to keep safety, the rights and interests of the water skiers, boaters, paddleboards, kayaks, sailors, swimmers, and wakeboarders and property owners in mind—a difficult task! Any thoughts or opinions on this topic would be welcome.  

Meydenbauer Bay Park Beach Pollution and Closure: The Meydenbauer Bay Park swimming beach was planned to be open by June 25th. However, water samples taken by King County revealed high levels of Ecoli bacteria in the water which delayed the opening for approximately two weeks. It is believed that this was caused by the large number of Canadian geese in the Bay. All residents, boaters, and park visitors are advised not to feed geese or other waterfowl to avoid beach and park closures.  

Milfoil Treatment: Each year, the Meydenbauer Bay Neighbors Association, together with the City of Bellevue, Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club, the Condominiums facing the Bay, and single-family residents on the Bay treat the water by using a licensed and approved applicator. This treatment for the invasive species of Eurasian Milfoil and Brazilian Elodea will be performed on July 18, 2022, a date authorized by the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.  
Shots fired, Fourth of July, Parking and Traffic: During the week of June 20th, we received reports that shots were fired at approximately 2:00 a.m. near or in the park. Bellevue police investigated and thought it could have been fireworks. All residents are reminded that gunfire and fireworks are illegal and will be prosecuted. Residents are invited to enjoy the City of Bellevue fireworks display at the downtown park; however, they are cautioned to obey parking and traffic regulations while doing so.  

Visitor Moorage: The City of Bellevue Park Rangers will be enforcing security and usage of the City of Bellevue Visitor Moorage at the City dock at the foot of 100th Street.

Hello Meydenbauer Bay Neighbors. It is spring on Meydenbauer Bay, and the rain is warmer!
 
Sadly, our longtime MBNA board member and past President, Aaron Dichter from 10,000 Meydenbauer, passed away last week from natural causes. Aaron was a founding member of the MBNA, was the second President, and he devoted hundreds of volunteer hours working with the neighborhood and the city planning for the Meydenbauer Bay Park. He will be greatly missed. 
 
Some of you may have noticed a series of lighted orange buoys around the bay a few weeks ago. These were gillnets placed there by the Muckleshoot Indians who have treaty fishing rights to Lake Washington and its surrounding area. Recently, their chief fish biologist informed me that they are trying to increase the sockeye salmon runs by identifying and catching non-native predator fish, such as Bass, Pike, Carp, and others that feed on salmon fingerlings. I was also told that they caught a significant number of predator fish both in Meydenbauer Bay and elsewhere in the lake and that they may continue this process through the summer in various locations.
 
REI has significantly increased their rental Kayak and paddleboard inventory at the city dock adjacent to the park. Therefore, you should expect more renters out on the water this summer. While boating, please be on the lookout for novice paddlers around the bay. The MBNA is working with REI and the city to ensure there is room for everyone on the bay.
 
In addition, the City of Bellevue, the City of Medina, the Mercer Island Marine Patrol, MBNA, and Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club are looking into proposing a 7 Knots no wake zone in Meydenbauer Bay. If adopted, this would extend from Pickle Point to Groat Point across the mouth of the Bay. With the increase in paddling, swimming, floating, sailing, and other water-related activities, this is viewed as a water safety issue for all Bay users.

As summer approaches and traffic around the Bay increases, this will be the best place to stay up to date on neighborhood news. The Upcoming City of Bellevue City Fall Election Cycle:
This year there are three City Council positions open. The incumbents are Lynne Robinson, Jared Nieuwenhuis and Conrad Lee. The challengers are Gina Johnson, Ruth Lipscomb and Dexter Borbe. The MBNA had planned to hold a Candidate Forum in October as we have for the last 13 years when there have been City Council elections. Our event was scheduled on October 14th at the Overlake Golf Club.

However, due to the increase in COVID cases and the Delta Variant, we have decided to cancel this in-person event. We have made arrangements with three other Neighborhood Associations for our MBNA members to attend ZOOM Candidate Forum events which are as follows:

Oct 13 - 6:30 PM East Link update with Lochleven, Vuecrest & Meydenbauer:
The Lochleven Community Association has confirmed the following meeting with Sound Transit. This is important that your voice is heard.  The meeting will  include a review and examination of the upcoming changes to transit once light rail is running from downtown Bellevue.  This is a input pivotal meeting before routes are finalized.  If you are wondering on the impact to getting to downtown Seattle, the International District, UW or Seattle Center to watch the Krakens, you should attend.   Major changes are coming to multiple routes including the 271, 550 and others.  With these change, bus routes are shifting and will terminate at South Bellevue P&R or Mercer Island, requiring a transfer to the light rail.   Attend to share your concerns and suggestions.   Time: Oct 13, 2021 06:30-7:15 PM Pacific Time (US and Canada) Join Zoom Meeting https://us06web.zoom.us/j/87385057969

Meydenbauer Bay Park Update:
This summer we had good traffic at Meydenbauer Bay Park. The REI Kayak and Paddleboard Rental Program was very popular. The increase in security hours was successful, with both Park Ranger and Security Services enforcing park hours, and the lifeguards were excellent.
 
MBNA Board Members have been meeting with the City of Bellevue Park Department officials on the planning for Phase 11 was delayed due to COVID restrictions and the inability to conduct in-person meetings. It is expected that this will start with design work in mid 2022.
 
Mifoil Treatment:
Milfoil treatment took place in mid-July with the City of Bellevue, the various condos around the Bay, Meydenbauer Bay Yacht Club, and 35 single-family residents around the Bay participating. As usual, the Mercer Island Marine Patrol who patrol the Bay under contract with the City of Bellevue did an excellent job.

Here’s a brief recap from Scott Vander Hyden, Project Manager, on park construction highlights from mid-November to mid-December.

• Work is complete to replace the aging water line along Lake Washington Boulevard (LWB).
• Moving overhead power lines underground and building a sidewalk along the park on the south side of LWB is slated for completion this winter.  Intermittent lane closures along LWB between the bridge and 99th Avenue Northeast will continue through the first quarter of 2018.
• This winter crews will continue beach house construction and will install viewing platforms and several large retaining walls in the park.  
• Later this winter, improvements will begin along 99th Avenue creating diagonal parking on the west side of 99th and sidewalks on both sides. The street end will serve as a main entrance to the park and will have a small boat load/unload area. 
• The naturalized ravine area and day-lighted channel are nearing completion. Final landscaping will be installed next spring. To create more natural shoreline conditions, concrete and large rocks that once armored the shoreline have been removed.
• Crews will complete the pier by attaching the barged-in floating sections to pilings later this winter.
• Erosion controls measures are now in place, including protection of the slopes from the upcoming rainy season.

The Meydenbauer Bay Neighbors Assn. held a forum on Oct. 12th with all 8 candidates running for Bellevue City Council this November. Candidates answered questions about the waterfront park, traffic, homelessness , urban growth, and preserving neighborhoods. The forum was well attended by 85 or so Bellevue voters who were able to meet the candidates at the end of the program.
 
MBNA has also received the following update from Scott Vander Hyden, City Project Manager of the new waterfront park:
 

• The pilings and trestle for the pier are now complete. Later this fall the floating sections of the pier will be barged in and attached to pilings.
  
• Earthmoving, utilities installations, and construction of the beach house and viewing platforms will continue through the fall as weather permits. Rockery construction is underway and two of the large retaining walls are now complete.
• Work along Lake Washington Boulevard will begin in early November and continue through the spring of 2018.  Activities will include moving overhead power lines underground, replacing the aging waterline, and installing a sidewalk along the south side of the boulevard.
• Later in the winter improvements will begin along 99th Avenue Northeast south of Lake Washington Blvd. including diagonal parking on the west side of 99th and sidewalks on both sides. The street end will have as a small personal watercraft unload area and serve as a main entrance into the park.
• In the ravine area, the formerly armored shoreline with concrete and large rocks is being naturalized and the stream daylighted.  Habitat gravel has been placed along the shoreline and spawning salmon have already been seen in the area.

The Meydenbauer Bay Neighbors Association will hold this year’s Candidate Forum on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 PM at Overlake Golf and Country Club.
 
The Candidates will address important issues facing Bellevue, including:

• Traffic
  
• Parking
• Homelessness
• Neighborhood Development
• Safety

 
This Forum will allow you to meet the Candidates and the Candidates to present their positions on the issues so we can make the best choices to govern the City of Bellevue after the November elections.
 
The Forum will be held at Overlake Golf and Country Club, 8000 NE 16th Street in Medina.  There is plenty of parking available.  Refreshments will be provided and there is no charge for attending the Forum.
